The importance of remembering Allah

فَاذْكُرُونِي أَذْكُرْكُمْ وَاشْكُرُوا لِي وَلَا تَكْفُرُونِ

Meaning: Remember Me, and I will remember you. Be grateful to Me and do not be ungrateful to Me. Qur’an 2:152.

Meaning: Those who believe and whose hearts find peace in remembering Allah. Surely, hearts find peace in remembering Allah. Qur’an 13:28.

Do not dismiss short remembrances

Remember the supplications taught for beginning and finishing a meal, entering and leaving home, and entering and leaving the toilet. Their value includes connecting everyday moments with remembrance of Allah.

Sahih Muslim 2018a describes Satan saying that there is no lodging or food when a person remembers Allah on entering home and when eating. This guidance is an invitation to trust Allah’s protection, not to live in constant fear.

Intention, understanding and attention

Intention is the heart’s purpose: worshipping Allah, thanking Him and seeking refuge in Him. Certainty means firm belief in Allah and His promise. These are related but distinct. A strong intention is not an independent hidden power; reliance is upon Allah. See Sahih al-Bukhari 1.

When saying “I seek refuge in You,” remember whom you are asking and what you seek protection from. Meanings are provided alongside the Arabic to help with this. Regular practice is good; if familiarity reduces attention, return your mind to the meaning. Do not declare someone’s remembrance worthless because they do not yet understand every word.

Avoid neglect and excessive fear

Do not dismiss seeking refuge through Al-Falaq and An-Nas. Equally, do not interpret every difficulty as evil eye or envy and become suspicious of others. Dhikr develops your relationship with Allah; it should not become repeated fear about whether every word was said perfectly. Continuing difficulty alone does not prove weak intention or faith.

Bringing remembrance into your routine

  • Set aside suitable time in the morning and evening.
  • Develop a habit of reading the bedtime collection before sleep.
  • Learn short supplications for meals, home and other everyday occasions.
  • Follow counts stated in the source; do not invent special numbers or guaranteed worldly outcomes.
  • Learn meanings gradually. If you forget, resume without despair.

The Prophet ﷺ taught that the deeds most beloved to Allah are consistent ones, even if small. Sahih al-Bukhari 6464.
